How to Obtain a Security Guard License in New York
Follow these step-by-step instructions to become a licensed security guard in New York. Keep in mind this is for individuals who have never had a NYS security guard license.
Getting Started
Obtaining a security guard license in New York requires completing specific steps. Below is a simple breakdown of the process to help you get started.
Step 1: Meet Basic Requirements
Must be at least 18 years old
Must be eligible to work in the United States
Must have no serious criminal convictions. (Not sure if your eligible? Click here to call NYS and ask them directly!)
Must have a current NYS photo driver’s license or non-driver ID card
Step 2: Complete 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training
This is the first required course and must be completed before applying for your security guard license. You can complete this training online to get started quickly.
Step 3: Get your fingerprints taken from Identigo

Optional Step: Apply for a Job!
If you are looking for a job many times Employers will send all the required paperwork up to the state for you!
If you send everything up to the State you do have to wait till you obtain the license before you are eligible to start working. Which can take up to 6 months! If an Employer send it up to the State for you then you are eligible to work right away! Click Here to Apply!
Step 4: Submit Your Application & DMV Consent Form
Fill out and complete the NYS Security Guard Application, with the DMV Consent Form to utilize your DMV Photo for your ID. If you are looking to pay via a credit card fill out the Credit Card Authorization Form as well:

Step 5: Once Hired Complete 16 Hour On-The-Job Training (OJT)
This 16 hour course must be completed within 90 days of employment.
Step 6: Maintain Your License
Complete the required 8 Hour Annual Training each year to keep your license active.
