Renewals
How to renew your NY security guard license
New York runs security guard registrations on a 2-year cycle, and you become eligible to renew 90 days before the expiration date printed on your card. Here is exactly what to do, checked against the New York Department of State.
Step zero
First, your training has to be on file
You cannot renew until your required training is complete and on file with the state. For an unarmed registration:
- 8-Hour Pre-Assignment, once.
- 16-Hour On-the-Job Training, once, if you have worked as a guard for more than 90 days.
- Two 8-Hour Annual In-Service courses completed within your current 2-year registration period.
Armed guards also need the 47-Hour Firearms course plus two 8-Hour Annual In-Service for Armed Guards within the period.
Here is the part most guards miss: only a New York State approved training school can submit your course completion to the state. You are not allowed to mail or fax a class certificate to DOS yourself. So if you are short an Annual In-Service, book it first and let the school file the roster.
The renewal
How the renewal itself works

Need the form itself? DOS hosts the current versions:
DOS still recommends requesting your personalized notice over the generic form, because it lists your training on file. Request one here.

Already lapsed
Already expired? Here is what changes
If your registration has already lapsed, the calendar decides your path.
- Expired less than 6 months: you can usually still renew, but you cannot legally work as a guard until it is renewed and back in effect. Get your training current and file right away so you stop losing work time.
- Expired 6 months or more: you can no longer renew. You have to apply for a brand new registration, which is a bigger lift than a renewal. That means a fresh application, electronic fingerprinting again, the application fee, a current NYS photo ID, and your training on file.
That gap is exactly why renewing on time is worth it. As of June 2026, NY DOS lists the renewal at $25, while starting over runs $36 for a new application plus a $102.50 fingerprint fee, on top of your training. Confirm current amounts on the DOS site before you pay.
Either way, the first move is the same. Get your Annual In-Service done so your training is on file, then file with the state.
Common questions
NY security guard license renewal FAQ
How often do I renew my NY security guard license?
Every 2 years. You can renew starting 90 days before the expiration date printed on your card.
Can I renew my NY security guard license online?
No. New York renews guard registrations by mail, using the personalized notice the Department of State sends you about 90 days before expiration.
What training do I need to renew?
Two 8-Hour Annual In-Service courses within your current 2-year period, plus the one-time 8-Hour Pre-Assignment and 16-Hour On-the-Job Training. Armed guards also need their firearms annuals.
I never got my renewal form, or I lost it. What do I do?
Request a personalized duplicate from the Department of State. It is recommended over the generic blank because it includes your training on file. Use the DOS request form or call 518-474-7569 with your name and Unique ID Number.
What happens if my security guard license expires?
You cannot work as a guard once it expires. If you are less than 6 months past expiration you can usually still renew. If it has been 6 months or more, you can no longer renew and must apply for a brand new registration instead.
What does it take to reapply if I waited too long?
A brand new registration application, electronic fingerprinting, the application fee, a current NYS photo ID, and your training on file. It is more time and money than a simple renewal, which is why renewing on time matters.
How do I get my Annual In-Service on file with the state?
Take it with a New York State approved school like Happy Pro. The school submits the roster to the Division of Criminal Justice Services, which transfers it to the Department of State. Individuals cannot submit certificates themselves.
