New York Pre-Assignment
The 8-Hour Pre-Assignment course in New York.
The 8-Hour Pre-Assignment is where every New York security guard starts. It is the first course the state requires, before you apply for an unarmed Security Guard Registration. Here is what it covers and how to begin.
What the course is
Eight hours of instruction with a DCJS-certified instructor that introduces the role of a security guard, the laws that apply on post, observation and reporting, and how to handle emergencies. You finish with a written certificate of completion the same day.
Who needs it
Anyone starting out in security in New York. After you finish, you apply to the Department of State for your unarmed registration. If you plan to go armed later, you still take this first, then add the 47-Hour Armed Guard course.
What is covered
- The role of a guard and the limits of your authority
- New York and federal laws that apply on post
- Observation, patrol, and accurate incident reporting
- Emergencies, evacuations, and when to call 911
- Ethics and professional conduct
What happens after
You apply to NY DOS for your unarmed registration, get fingerprinted, and clear a background check. Once you are hired, you complete the 16-Hour On-the-Job Training within 90 days. The full path is in our step-by-step guide.
Common questions
- Is the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment the first thing I do?
- Yes. It is the only security course New York lets you take before you apply for your registration. You take it first, then apply to NY DOS for your unarmed Security Guard Registration.
- Does finishing the course mean I am licensed?
- No. You get a certificate of completion. New York State issues the registration after you apply and pass a background check. The school trains you; the state registers you.
- How long is the certificate valid?
- The 8-Hour Pre-Assignment certificate is valid for 90 days for the purpose of applying for your registration, so apply soon after you finish.
- What do I bring?
- A valid government photo ID, a pen, and your attention for the full eight hours. New York requires the complete course.
